Vernon Patrick “Pat” Murphy, Jr.
Vernon Patrick Murphy, Jr. (67), known as “Pat Murphy,” a native of Mobile, AL, passed peacefully into the presence of God while at home, surrounded by his wife, son, and family, on Friday, September 27, 2019, in Mobile, AL, after a battle with cancer.
Born to parents, Vernon Patrick Murphy Sr., and Daina Beaudrie Murphy in 1952, Pat attended and graduated from Murphy High School in 1970. He then joined the Army Reserve, where he served for six years. Pat met and married Benita Averett and they were married 43 years. They have one son, Sean Patrick Murphy, and two grandchildren, Logan Patrick Murphy, and Darby Rose Murphy.
Pat had several occupations. He provided for his family as a reputable wallcovering installer for many years. But Pat’s primary passion was music. He was proficient on several instruments, primarily banjo. He also enjoyed audio engineering.
Pat was very involved at his church helping with audio, and was also a founding member of the church bluegrass type band, “The Circuit Riders.” Pat played banjo, mandolin, dobro, and fiddle with the Circuit Riders, performing for eager crowds, having fun, and raising money for missions for many years.
Pat and Benita worked together as musicians, performing over the years with several bands until forming their own band “Delta Reign” in 2004. With a unique, new style of bluegrass developed by the Murphy’s, the band had some success with three albums, a record deal, as well as touring and some radio airplay.
Pat enjoyed getting to know people. He was very outgoing, and never met a stranger. He was known for his corny jokes, and witty humor. He loved it when he would “bomb” with his jokes while onstage. He enjoyed working with his son, Sean, either hanging wallpaper, or especially engineering in his home studio. He adored his two grandchildren. Most of all, Pat had a strong personal faith in God, through Christ, and exemplified it by the way he lived his life. He and Benita enjoyed growing in their faith over the years, being involved in their church, as well as being ecumenically involved around the region.
Pat is preceded in death by parents, Vernon Patrick Murphy Sr., Daina Beaudrie Forbes; and brother, Perry Wayne Forbes.
He is survived by his Wife, Benita Averett Murphy; Son, Sean Patrick Murphy (Ryan Johnson); Grandchildren, Logan Patrick Murphy, and Darby Rose Murphy; Sister, Kathleen Murphy (Jimmy); Sister-in-laws, Patricia Lynn Averett, JoEllen Averett (Michael Graham), and Carolyn Forbes; brother-in-law, Randy Averett (Linda), as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, and other relatives.
