The Christ United Story

About 45 years ago, twelve families, along with our Founding Pastor, Jeff Spiller and his family, began to dream of a world-impacting congregation in the Western part of Mobile. They began meeting in the living room of one of the charter members’ homes and dreaming of what God might do in this new church.

They began with a commitment to provide humanity’s three basic spiritual needs: a relationship with God, a relationship with other Christians, and a purpose greater than themselves. As they lived into that vision, the new group of Christians began to grow in passion and number. During the first few years, the church moved several times, until God provided resources to build its first sanctuary on Grelot Road.

The church offered something compelling. The congregation was inspired by a vision to meet people’s spiritual needs and a passionate young pastor who communicated with relational authenticity that people loved. Beyond that, the church committed itself to being more than a place to come on Sunday morning. This new congregation wanted to be a permission-giving church. To accomplish this, they encouraged members to listen to the call of God and upon it to reach out in love to the community. The congregation grew into a church filled with missional entrepreneurs who began Bible studies, Sunday schools, and outreach ministries led by the members of this new church.

In a short time, hundreds began to call Christ United Methodist Church their church home. Within a decade, the church began to reach thousands of people with powerful, impactful worship, ministries, and missions. Throughout the church’s history, change and innovation have been part of the story. Many have been reached for Jesus Christ through a diversity of worship styles, unique ministries, and a desire to reach all people for Christ.

In 2016 our Founding Pastor passed the mantle of leadership to Dr. Rob Couch, our current lead pastor. In 2023, the church transitioned to become Christ United Church – A Methodist Community. The church continues its commitment to impact our community and world for Christ as we Love God, love people, and change the world.
