Adults Ministry

Lighthouse Library

Volunteers work a one-hour shift on Sunday mornings, once a month. Assist church members in selecting books and videos, checking them out and also checking returned books back in and shelving them. Currently, library hours are Sundays from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30. With more volunteers, the hours of operation could be expanded. Contact Dottie Graves at 251-421-3812.

Women’s Conference

A number of positions are available on this committee. They consist of refreshments, decorations, hospitality, favors, etc. The committee meets once per month from September through the conference date. The amount of time required varies depending on which sub-committee you serve. There are approximately 20 women on the committee who enjoy working together.


Celebrate Recovery

Dessert Maker

One Thursday a Month | You may be assigned or pick a Thursday each month to make a dessert for Celebrate Recovery. For instance, if you picked the first Thursday of each month, then you would bake a dessert and deliver it to the church on the first Thursday of each month. Greeter

Weekly Thursday Nights | Stand at the Fellowship Hall entry doors on Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. to greet persons coming to Celebrate Recovery. Direct those persons to the registration area. Greeters play a vital role in helping attendees feel welcomed and cared for as they enter. Contact Donna Alexander at 251-510-0905 if interested.


Christ Café Ministry

Cashier Volunteers

Christ Cafe’ volunteers are needed who can cashier, run our square POS system and make change. Cashiers are not required to have a food handlers card.

Food Service Volunteers

Christ Cafe’ volunteers are needed to assist in event set up, food prep, cooking, serving and cleaning for all functions. If you are directly involved with the food you are required to have a Mobile County Food Handlers card. Please contact Kyle Eckhoff at 251-342-0462 or email chef@christunited.com.

  • Wednesday Night Dinner – Volunteers needed from 3:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. depending on availability. We serve from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. and finish around 7:00 p.m.

  • Sunday Morning Breakfast – Volunteers come in at 7:00 a.m. and we serve from 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. We go to the 10:30 a.m. service and return to clean afterwards.

  • Special Events may vary a lot and are set up as needed. We usually need more help on bigger events.


Communication Ministry

Decorations Volunteer

Volunteers are needed to assist with the setup of themed decorations – sometimes around the holidays. This is an as needed, seasonal position during business hours, approximately 8-10 hours over a day or so. If interested, contact Denise Dunham.

Photographer

Photograph the people, events, classes, and life around our campus on an as needed basis. Time could range from 1 hour for a class, a Sunday service, or even to 12 total hours for VBS. If interested, contact Denise Dunham, Communications Director.

Work Room Volunteer

Volunteers assist with printed materials, mailers, and Sunday bulletins – including folding brochures, stuffing envelopes and bulletins, comb binding booklets, and applying address labels. This is an as needed, weekday opportunity during business hours – approximately 3-6 hours in a week, depending on the quantity of material. Grounds and Facilities

Grounds Ministry

Do you like to work outdoors? Is helping our church look good on the outside something you would like to do? Then join the Grounds Committee. We have lots of work to do around our campus. For more information contact Mike Mabrey.

Small Engine Repair Mechanic

Do you like fixing equipment or are you pretty handy with equipment maintenance? Help us with preventive maintenance for our grass cutting equipment. Contact Ricky Bell at 251-402-5197 for information.


Finance

Volunteers are needed to assist with printing materials, folding, stuffing envelopes and applying postage. Volunteers are also needed to count cash contributions during high attendance times such as VBS, Easter and Christmas. Interested, please contact Beth Lodwick.


JOY Worship

JOY Communion Server

Serve Communion at our monthly JOY Service which usually takes place the 2nd Sunday each month. Communion Servers needed in the Fellowship Hall (Building F) from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the monthly service. If interested, please contact Brad Boland.

JOY Welcome Crew

Greet, welcome, check-in, and assist arriving guests at our monthly JOY Service. The service is usually the 2nd Sunday each month. The Welcome Crew is needed in the Fellowship Hall (Building F) from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. If interested, please contact Brad Boland.

JOY Worship Setup Crew

Setup chairs, communion tables, information center, and prepare communion elements for our Monthly JOY Service. The service is usually the 2nd Sunday each month. The Setup Crew is needed in the Fellowship Hall (Building F) from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. for the monthly service. If interested, please contact Brad Boland.


Kids Ministry

Kids Worship

Volunteers needed every Sunday to help in Kids worship at the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services. We ask that you help one Sunday a month for one hour a month. Duties are to engage with the kids and help facilitate a small group for about 15 minutes during worship. If interested, please contact Susan Guillotte.

Check In/Out Person

Good with computers and willing to help check kids in and check kids out on the computer each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. (In between services). Interested? Please contact: Susan Guillotte.

Nursery

Volunteers needed Sundays to help in the Nursery during the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services. We ask that you help one Sunday a month for one hour a month. Duties are to play, rock and love the babies. If interested, please contact Susan Guillotte.

Preschool Worship

Volunteers needed on Sundays to help in the Preschool Worship during the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services. We ask that you help one Sunday a month for one hour a month. Duties are to engage with the kids and help the Preschool Leader. If interested, please contact Susan Guillotte.

VBS Volunteers

Lifegate Ministry

Check-in Worker

1 - 3 Times Weekly | Lifegate volunteers check clients in and make sure they have the proper documentation.  If interested, please contact Nell Powell at 251.391.6968.

Food Pantry Worker

1 - 3 Times Weekly | Lifegate volunteers sort and organize donated food items, put together food bags to be distributed to the clients at Lifegate and the front desk, and shop for food when needed. If interested, please contact Nell Powell at 251-391-6968.

Interviewers

1 - 3 Times Weekly | Lifegate volunteers meet with the client to obtain information regarding their employment status, determine the needs they have, and then present this information with the Lifegate Board.  If interested, please contact Nell Powell at 251-391-6968.


Live Nativity Volunteers

Sunday, December 3 | 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. | CU Parking Lot

Individuals, groups and families | Help us transform our parking lot into the sights and sounds of Bethlehem. We will create a Holy Night where the community will experience our portrayal of Jesus' time and birth. Individuals and families are needed for set up crews, technicians, marketplace booths, food preparations and more. Sign up now!


Membership

Two volunteer positions are needed: 1) Every other week, pull Attendance Sheets from the Attendance Pads in the Sanctuary, and 2) Every other week, mark Attendance for Sunday's Worship service in our computer. All training is provided. Please contact Dawn Bratcher.


NewSong Ministry

Band Members

NewSong services feature a live band leading worship weekly. The band is all volunteers, led by the NewSong Worship Leader, Courtney Foote. Volunteers may choose how many times per month they play. On the week they play, band members will be expected to listen to music and practice ahead of rehearsal time on Wednesday at 6:15pm. Sunday mornings consist of a run-through/sound check at 7:45 a.m. and playing both worship services at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Typically, the band consists of vocalists, one drummer, one keyboardist, one acoustic guitar player, one-to-two electric guitar players and one bass guitar player. Members must attend 1-2 practices, used as auditions, before leading on a Sunday morning.

NewSong Communion Servers

NewSong Worship Services serve Communion once per month! We need volunteers to serve the elements as congregation members come through the line. Volunteers need to arrive 5 minutes before worship starts to check-in with Courtney Foote. They’ll also need to be able to hold a plate or chalice for up to 5 minutes as members flow through. Volunteers may choose between the 9:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. service.

NewSong Scripture Readers

NewSong Worship Services has congregation members read Scripture each week in worship. Volunteers should feel comfortable reading in front of a crowd. Volunteers are asked to arrive 5 minutes prior to worship beginning to check-in with Courtney Foote. Volunteers may choose to read at either the 9:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. worship service.


Pastoral Care

Barnabas Writer

As Needed | Writing and mailing sympathy cards to members whose loved one has died. Individuals who receive cards are sometimes spouses, parents, adult children, and adult grandchildren. A Barnabas Writer requires a strong essence of sensitivity and compassion. Cards, envelopes, and postage provided. Volunteers rotate as needed when deaths are reported. Card Writer

Monthly | Write encouragement cards to members on Pastoral Care list consisting of those members who may be home bound, chronically ill, or in a senior residence. Cards are also sent to those who have recently had a loved one die. List divided among 5 – 6 volunteers each month. Along with writing words of encouragement, you will include a scripture reference of your choice. Cards and envelopes provided. After completing cards, drop them off at the church for postage and mailing. If interested, please contact: pastoral.care@christunited.com.

Deliveries

Quarterly As Needed | Deliver Upper Room magazines or gifts to home bound and senior facilities. You are given addresses separated by zip code. We try to group those that are close in the vicinity. A name tag and business cards are provided to identify you as a Christ United Pastoral Care volunteer. You are not required to go into the home and visit. You may ring the doorbell or knock and leave the magazine or gift on the front porch with a business card. Home Bound Visitations

Monthly | Visit members who are often unable to come to church due to chronic illness, age, or physical ability. You are provided with names and addresses. A name tag and business cards are provided to identify you as a Christ United Pastoral Care volunteer. Visits typically last from 30 minutes to an hour. Hospital Visitations

One or Two days Biweekly or Monthly | Visit and pray with those members in the hospital or having a procedure/surgery. Training provided. Each volunteer has certain days each month that they visit hospitals. A name tag and business cards are provided to identify you as a Christ United Pastoral Care volunteer. Meals

As Needed | Provide meals for those who have been recently discharged from the hospital or for funerals. You do not have to prepare these meals at home. They can be picked up from restaurants and delivered to the home or brought to the church. When providing food items for funerals you may be asked to bring a certain side dish or item. These can be brought to the church on the morning of the service. If interested, please contact: pastoral.care@christunited.com.

Phone Calls

Monthly | Making calls of encouragement to members on our Pastoral Care List consisting of those members who may be home bound, chronically ill, or in a senior residence. List divided among 4 volunteers each month. If interested, please contact: pastoral.care@christunited.com.

Senior Facility Visitation

Monthly | Visit members in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Training provided. Duration of visits vary. A name tag and business cards are provided to identify you as a Christ United Pastoral Care volunteer. If interested, please contact: pastoral.care@christunited.com.


Production Ministry

Audio Engineer (Front of House or Online)

Volunteers engineer sound that allows people to worship freely, is pleasing to the ears, and free of distractions. If interested, please contact, media@christunited.com.

Camera Operator

Volunteers ensure those present in worship and those watching via live web stream receive excellent camera shots of those leading worship and teaching on stage. If interested, please contact, media@christunited.com.

Lighting Operator

Volunteers design lights in a way that adds to a worshipful environment and does not distract. If interested, please contact, media@christunited.com.

Prayer Request Computer Operator

Volunteers cultivate community by ensuring our congregation is engaged with the prayer needs of those around them. If interested, please contact, media@christunited.com.

ProPresenter Operator

Volunteers ensure our congregation can focus on the words they are singing and freely worship without distraction. If interested, please contact, media@christunited.com.


Recreation Ministry

C-Sports Volunteer

C-Sports, a volunteer-led program, is always in need of coaches, team parents, field work, equipment set-up and breakdown, and many other duties. If interested, please contact Rose Farnell or call 251-706-3326.

Recreation Desk

Desk volunteers needed in our recreation facility to assist with many duties including greeting people, giving information about our programming, helping to keep the facility prepped and cleaned, answering phones, filing and many other duties. Students Ministry

Student Check-in

Volunteers needed to greet and welcome students as they arrive on Sunday morning services. This volunteer will use an iPad to check students into the system, and collect basic demographic information to register new students. One volunteer needed for each service on Sunday mornings from 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. and from 10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Volunteers choose to work one or more Sundays per month. If interested, please contact Susan Guillotte.

Students Kitchen Crew

Volunteers needed to serve meals to our students on Sunday mornings and evenings. This volunteer position includes making sausage biscuits (Sunday AM only), kitchen set-up, serving food and drinks, and kitchen clean-up. Volunteers serve one to two hours on one Sunday per month. Students Sunday Suppers

Bring a home cooked meal throughout the year for our Students. You may drop off food in Youth Cafe by 4:45 p.m. on Sundays. If interested, please contact Susan Guillotte.


Welcome Team Ministry

Christ Center Front Desk

Greet guests as they enter the Christ Center Lobby, provide information to guests, answer phone calls, communicate with security and other church staff as needed. If interested, please contact Dawn Burnham.

Connection Points

Assist guests at either our Sanctuary or NewSong Connection Points by answering questions and assist Pastors with guests after services. If interested, please contact Dawn Burnham.

Connection Point Decoration/Setup

Help to create an attractive, welcoming environment for our coffee areas. Assist with decorating and setup for special events, refreshments, etc. If interested, please contact Dawn Burnham, Guest Service Coordinator.

Door Greeter

Once Monthly | Provide inviting presence by opening doors, welcoming people to church, and providing assistance in a personalized way. One service a month. If interested, please contact Dawn Burnham, Guest Service Coordinator.

Guide

Once Monthly | Assist guests by directing/walking them to their destination (nursery, sanctuary, children’s area, etc.). and provide basic information about our church. If interested, please contact Dawn Burnham.

Sanctuary Communion Servers

Christmas Greening of the Sanctuary

Volunteers gather on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. to get the Sanctuary ready for Advent and Christmas. If interested, please fill out form.

Pulpit Greenery/Flowers Team

Help make the Sanctuary Pulpit/Lectern area beautiful for Sunday Services each week (1-2 hours per week). If interested, please fill out form.

Music Library

Organization and upkeep of the music library is an ongoing task throughout the year. Volunteers can coordinate with the Worship Arts Minister for projects. If interested, please fill out form.

Sanctuary Choir Singers

Singing in the Sanctuary choir is a twice-a-week commitment. Rehearsal is on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m., and singing on most Sunday mornings as well as for special services like Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. If interested, please fill out form.


Other Ministry Volunteer Needs

English as a Second Language Program

People come to our community from around the world to work and study. English language instruction is a rewarding way to share God’s love with them. There are a number of volunteer opportunities. Please contact Joyce Genz or call/text to 251-259-1675.

ESL Teacher: 6 hours per week; Classes are Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until Noon; must have teaching experience or desire to be trained in ESL techniques.

ESL Classroom Assistant: Guide students in conversation practice or in small group projects. One to six hours per week; Monday or Friday between 9 a.m. and Noon.

ESL Volunteer Coordinator: Recruit and assign volunteers as needed; time commitment varies. Do not need to be present during class time.

ESL Administrative Assistant: Manage email requests, class rosters, and student communications; create forms for registration and class schedules. Computer skills required. Do not need to be available during class time.
